Today was the beginning of the Winter GM Meetings in Major League Baseball. This provides an opportunity for GMs and agents to all meet in one central location to discuss possible dealings. Today at the Winter Meetings, Twins GM Terry Ryan stated that the Twins are looking for pitching. They have been connected to names such as Capuano and Harang in recent days but they have since found new teams. Today they have even been said to be looking into Mark Buehrle as well but he may be out of their price range. Ryan says their are many other pitchers the Twins have looked into that have not been reported. Two other players to keep an eye on are Japanese pitchers Tsuyoshi Wada and Hisashi Iwakuma. The Twins have been in contact with both players’ agents and remain interested in them as well. For those of you leery of Japanese players after the Nishioka experiment, it has been said that pitchers have a much easier time than position players in the transition to the MLB game after coming from Japan.
Terry Ryan has also said he expects to be in contact with the agent of Michael Cuddyer in the next couple days and that he is still a top priority for the Twins. The Twins have also been in contact with the agent of Jason Kubel. The amount of money the Twins are able to spend on pitching likely will depend on Cuddyer’s decision as he remains their top target.
The Twins have also re-signed free agent closer Matt Capps to a one year contract on Monday.
